“Sorry, PowerPoint can't read …”
PowerPoint stops with “Sorry, PowerPoint can't read C:\Users\…\Talk.pptx.” Some people see the odd “Sorry, PowerPoint can't read ^0” instead. It also often appears straight after “PowerPoint found a problem with content” when Repair fails.
What the message means
PowerPoint couldn't make sense of the file at all, so it gave up instead of offering a repair. The
^0 version is the same error with the file name missing: the message template wasn't filled in.
It's a sign the problem happened before PowerPoint even got to the file, which usually means blocking, syncing
or the file's location rather than damage.
What usually causes it
- Blocked or untrusted file, typically an email attachment or a download.
- Opening from OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams while the file is online-only or still syncing.
- A very long folder path, deep inside synced folders.
- Not really a .pptx, for example a Keynote or Google Slides file that was renamed, or a download that saved an error page instead of the file.
- Real damage from a save that was cut short or a copy that didn't finish.
Free fixes to try first
- Copy it somewhere simple. Copy the file to your Desktop or
C:\Tempwith a short name, then open it from PowerPoint with File → Open. If it's in OneDrive, right-click → Always keep on this device first. - Unblock it. Right-click → Properties, tick Unblock, click OK.
- Check its size. A presentation that should be 20 MB but is 300 KB didn't finish copying. Download or copy it again from the original source.
- Check what it is. Open it in Notepad (don't save). A real .pptx starts with
PK. If it starts with<htmlor<!DOCTYPE, the download saved a web page; get the file again. - Reuse Slides. Start a blank presentation, Home → New Slide → Reuse Slides, and browse to the file. This reads only the slides and sometimes gets past the error.
- Earlier versions and other apps. Try Properties → Previous Versions, OneDrive version history, PowerPoint for the web, LibreOffice Impress or Google Slides.
Where Office File Repair helps
If the file starts with PK, is about the right size, and still fails everywhere, it's damaged
inside. Office File Repair reads it piece by piece, recovers every slide it can, puts in a
plain master or layout where the original was lost, and builds a presentation that opens. You see the recovered
slide text before you pay, and the file never leaves your computer.
When nothing can help
If the file is 0 KB, all zeros, or much smaller than it should be because the copy never finished, the missing slides aren't in the file. Get another copy from wherever it came from, or see file shows 0 KB.
Common questions
What does “Sorry, PowerPoint can't read ^0” mean?
It's the “can't read” error with the file name missing. It usually points to a blocked file, a file in OneDrive or SharePoint that isn't fully downloaded, or a path PowerPoint can't reach, rather than a damaged presentation.
Why can't PowerPoint read a file from OneDrive or SharePoint?
The file may be online-only or still syncing. Right-click it, choose Always keep on this device, wait for the sync to finish, then copy it to a local folder and open it from there.
How do I get my slides out of a presentation PowerPoint can't read?
Start a blank presentation and use New Slide, Reuse Slides to insert the slides from the damaged file. If that fails, try an earlier version, Google Slides or LibreOffice Impress, then a repair tool that recovers slides one by one.
